Bedtime is My Favorite Time of Day
On a night like tonight, if Derick were home, we'd probably open the windows. We may not leave them open all night. But the brisk air is refreshing. My thermostat is set for the heat to come on at 65*. Right now it is 70-ish in my house. With the temperature warm enough to keep the furnace turned off, Derick would open the upstairs windows, if he were here, and let the breeze blow through our bedroom. Then he would pull me close and we would burrow ourselves deep under the covers. And peace and sleep would engulf us. Together.
Bedtime is my favorite time of day. All the kids in bed, sleeping soundly. No matter how crazy the day is, when everyone is in bed, it feels peaceful. And we would finally have a little time to ourselves. Tonight, the windows will stay closed. And instead of his strong arms, it will be his old PT sweatshirt that will keep me warm. Peace may engulf me. Peace that passes all understanding. But, not sleep. No, sleep eludes me.
Morning comes in at a close second where favorites are concerned. About 6 months before he left, Derick started drinking coffee. To outsiders, this is nothing special. But, for him it was a real sacrifice. After at least 10 years of no caffeine, he started drinking coffee. For me. He said that if he he drank coffee, then he would be motivated to get up early and spend more time with me. Fresh brewed coffee didn't always get him out of bed, but it's the thought that counts, right?!
He called tonight. The kids and I were zoned out in front of the TV. The call always looks like it's coming from Florida. Gotta love technology though. He wanted to say hi and tell us he loves us before he starts his day. Funny the difference the time zones make. I was hoping he would call before he went to bed. That would have been around noon. But he ran out of time. He waited til morning for him, just later in the day for us. It's always so wonderful to hear his voice! It has a soothing quality for me and for the kids.
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7
